I was told today from my friend who is a doctor that a 17 month old baby should know about 25-50 words. I don't think Eleanor knows nearly as much. Is it because she's learning two languages at once or will she be a late talker?
For my reference...
she can say:
Mam-ma: Food
Ah-Pah: Daddy
A-man: his real name
Mah: Madison
Mal: Socks
Ella
Wow
I think that's about it but I hope I'm forgetting a lot.
But she knows:
how to say one
how old she is
going to the bathroom
taking a shower
eating
sleeping
her nose
her head
her belly button
her eyes
giving kisses
high five
the phone
That seems very little to me. I think she's going to be really athletic but not so book smart. I hope she proves me wrong.

My girl's not talking at all yet, and she's 2 weeks older than Eleanor. I'm not concerned, since she's shown me that she has excellent comprehension and can follow multiple step directions. She also has the ability to tell me what she wants without using words. So it's not a big deal to me that she doesn't talk, especially since I know that neither my brother nor I started speaking until we were about 2 years old.
By the way, kids who grow up with 2 languages (or more) do tend to be delayed in speech.
every baby is different- don't worry about it. from what i gather, elle has a great grasp of language in that she is picking up on some words and she understands you. i bet you she will have a language explosion here soon, and you'll have a chatterbox!
Bilingual children dont have as many words as early. It's ok and completely normal! As long as you know she's understanding you and she's trying to communicate, she's doing good!
I have a friend whose son is learning two languages as well (English and Dagaare) and he doesn't have as many words as she'd like either. Sounds to me like that's normal.
